American fridge freezers explained
American style fridge freezers are typically taller and wider than normal fridge freezers, with heights of 1800cm and widths of 80cm – 90cm.
American fridge freezers tend to have a lot more storage space, and have more features built in.
Features to look for
Frost free and Auto-defrost. Prevents build up of frost so you never have to defrost.
Anti-bacterial protection. Microban is an anti-bacterial, anti-fungus and anti-algae agent which is built into the lining of the fridge. This prevents any build up of mold or bacteria, keeping your fridge clean, and your food safe.
Safety Spill Glass Shelves. These hold up to a pint of water in case of any spillages.
Self closing doors. Doors will close automatically in case they are left open, preventing damage to the fridge freezer, and keeping all your food safe.
Vacuum storage. A vacuum is created in a small container to keep food fresh for longer.
Fast freeze. Quickly lowers the freezer temperature to –26C°, reducing ice build up on food. This is the optimal temperature to preserve fresh produce. Normal operating temperatures are around –18C°.
Premium features
American fridge freezers also tend to have the following premium features.
Water Dispenser. Dispenses and stores chilled water.
Touch LCD control panels. Allow you to program and configure your fridge freezer. For example setting the temperature or freezing schedules. Child locks prevent accidental changes.
Door alarms. Prevent users from leaving the door open.
Temperature Warning System. An alarm is triggers if the temperature gets too high.
Energy Ratings explained
Fridge freezers are rated from A+ to G. A+ appliances are more energy efficient, and can save up to £45 a year compared to a G rated appliance. A+ rated fridge freezers use 25% less electricity than A rated fridge freezers.
You can calculate the cost of running a fridge by taking the ‘kilowatts per year’ figure for each fridge, and multiplying it by the amount you pay for a ‘kilowatt hour’ from your energy provider.
Freezer star ratings
Freezers will come with a star rating from one to four stars. Higher stars are better, and indicate food can be safely stored for longer (up to 12 months for a 4 star freezer).
Noise levels
The volume of noise that a fridge freezer creates is measured in decibels (dBA). Anything below 40 is acceptable, 50+ decibels would be fairly loud.
Placement
Make sure you take accurate measurements of where your new fridge freezer will go. Some models need extra space behind them to allow for air venting. Integrated fridge freezers allow you to fix panels that match your kitchen units onto the front, effectively hiding the fridge making it look like another kitchen unit.
Make sure you check the route in, as some american fridge freezers may not fit through the front or back door. Also check the ceiling height.
